There are a wide range of resources available online to assist the staff members of museums and historic sites in fulfilling their missions. This guide provides links to helpful resources on the web for collections care, exhibit development, interpretation, funding and preservation. Regional Alliance for Preservation (RAP) provides comprehensive preservation information to cultural institutions and the public. Their Starter Kit for Collections Managers provides information on the proper care of metals, furniture, paper, textiles and books along with other helpful collections information. National Park Service reference guide on how to manage, preserve, document, access and use museum collections.
Return to Top The Foundation Center Libraries online have a wealth of information for grantseekers, as well as guides to writing grant proposals. An independent grant-making agency of the United States government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities. National Endowment for the Arts has extensive grant programs and exists to foster, preserve, and promote excellence in the arts, to bring art to all Americans, and to provide leadership in arts education. (UGRR related only) A National Park Service Underground Railroad program to coordinate and provide grant assistance for preservation and education efforts accross the country and integrate local historical places, museums, and interpretive programs associated with the Underground Railroad. NYSCA makes over 2700 grants each year to arts organizations. The Museum Program supports the advancement of museums and museum service organizations by embracing the notion that clear planning and direction fosters stronger institutions, and that partnerships and collaboration can help broaden an organization's perspective and assist in better reaching its audience.
Preservation Resource Guide- OPRHP operates the state parks, historic sites and heritage areas of New York State. It administers funds for historic preservation and park programs and provides preservation guidance.
The Preservation Association of Central New York (PACNY) is dedicated to the conservation of our area’s historic architecture, neighborhoods and mainstreets, preserving the past through adaptive reuse to serve as a living part of our community.
Save America’s Treasures is a national effort to protect America's threatened cultural treasures, including historic structures, collections, works of art, maps and journals that document and illuminate the history and culture of the United States. Return to top The Mission of this not-for-profit Association is to represent the museum community, address its needs, and enhance its ability to serve the public. Association for Living History, Farm & Agricultural Museums is a nonprofit organization for living history farms, agricultural museums, and museums that use living history. The American Association for State and Local History provides leadership service, and support for its members, who preserve and interpret state and local history.
Institute of Museum and Library Services is an independent agency that supports a wide range of museums including art and history, science and zoos, and all types of libraries and archives. The Lower Hudson Conference is an agency for museums and historical agencies in the Hudson Valley and greater Metroplitan area that provides helpful resources. The Museum Association of New York works on behalf of all museums in the state to promote museums and provide professional support and training for museum staff and volunteers.
The Upstate History Alliance is a non-profit organization which provides support, advice and training to historical societies, museums, historians and others interested in history in upstate New York.
